Infant & Toddler Programs

Available at the DLSA Wilsonton Aquatic Centre.

The Infant program initially focuses on the importance of water safety and awareness. From the age of 4 months we begin to focus on the reflex action. The reflex action, is a series of skills such as water orientation, breath control, floatation skills and propulsion skills.

To help introduce these important drills and skills whilst maintaining your child’s attention, we base our lessons around songs and games. The DLSA Infant/Toddler Program also utilises a unique 'Circuit Program' to keep the classes interesting while your child continues to practice the reflex action skills.

Our Infant/Toddler Program is conducted hydrotherapy pool which is heated to 33 degrees. This ensures your child will be working in a warm environment all year round.

To ensure that your child continues to progress at their own pace our program is structured according to their individual skill level not age. Through repetition your child will develop and progress to the early skills required for Learn to Swim.

Infant Program Levels

* AQUA PLAY (AP) - 4 mths to 6 mths

With a little help from mum or dad, your child will be introduced to a fun, warm and safe aquatic environment during a 20 min class.

* MUMS & BUBS (MB) - 6 mths to 14 mths

Your baby will now commence learning the reflex action and you will given some drills to practice at home. You will also be shown how to correctly hold your baby’s legs, helping your achieve the correct position for freestyle backstroke kick.

* TODDLERS & MUMS (TM)

Toddlers and Mums continues to gradually increase your child’s water confidence, whilst continuing to work on the reflex action. We continue our emphasis on water safety drills and skills using songs and games in order to make learning easy and enjoyable.

* ADVANCED TODDLERS & MUMS (ATM)

Now that, together with you, your child has been shown the importance of the reflex action, it is time for them to try it on their own. Our Advanced Toddler and Mums/Dads classes allow confident toddlers to continue their skill development unassisted. Mums or dads will still need to be in the water each class because we will also begin to introduce more advanced skills with your assistance.

* ADVANCED TODDLERS (AT)

It’s now time for Mums or Dads to let their children swim by themselves. At this stage your child will start to learn some of the important drills required for Learn to Swim.

A parent will be asked to assist the teacher each week for safety reason.
